You do not unhook anything heavy. We disconnect the appliance, walk it out on a dolly, and protect the floors and door frames on the way. For a gas stove or a hard-plumbed washer, shutting off the supply valve before we arrive helps, but we take reasonable care of the connections either way.
An appliance is mostly steel, so the large majority of each unit is recycled rather than landfilled. We separate the metal so it goes into the right stream.
Refrigerant is the part people get wrong
Fridges, freezers and AC units hold refrigerant that has to be recovered under environmental rules before the shell is scrapped. You cannot legally set one at the curb to be crushed with the gas still in it. We take these to a proper recycler that recovers the refrigerant first.
Old appliance pickup: the free curb option, and when it does not work
The Region of Waterloo will collect some appliances on your once-a-month bulky-item day for free, and it is worth knowing the rules before you pay anyone:
- Each item must be under 200 lb (90 kg). Most dryers and dishwashers qualify. Many fridges, chest freezers and older ranges do not.
- Doors must be taped shut on dishwashers, dryers, stoves and similar appliances, so a child cannot climb in.
- It waits for your bulky day, which is once a month and capped at three items for a single-family home.
- Refrigerant appliances are their own case. A fridge, freezer or air conditioner needs its refrigerant recovered before it is scrapped. Fridge removal: what actually happens to the unit
Fridge removal is the appliance job people search for most, and it is the one with the most rules. The refrigerant in the sealed system has to be recovered by a certified handler; then the steel shell, the copper and the compressor are recycled, and the plastic liner and foam are what is left. We take fridges and freezers to a recycler that does the recovery first, so the gas is not vented when the shell is crushed. Empty it the day before and leave the doors open to dry if you can; a fridge full of spoiled food is heavier and messier to carry.

That is the fee you would pay hauling a fridge yourself, plus the truck to get it there and the two people to load it.
