Couch removal in Kitchener costs $90 to $150 for one couch or sofa, carried out from wherever it sits, stairs included. Two couches, or a couch with a loveseat and chair, usually fill about a quarter truck at $200 to $300. The price is locked before we lift, and most pickups are same-day or next-day. It is the most common single item in our junk removal in Kitchener work, so this page covers only couches: sofas, sectionals, sleeper sofas and recliners.

What couch removal costs
Couches are priced by the room they take in the truck, the same way as every other load we haul. Here is where the usual jobs land against our published rates:
| What you are getting rid of | Typical all-in price |
|---|---|
| One couch, sofa, loveseat or recliner | $90 to $150 |
| A two-piece sectional | $90 to $150 |
| Two couches, or a couch, loveseat and chair | $200 to $300 (about 1/4 truck) |
| A large three- to five-piece sectional | $200 to $300 (about 1/4 truck) |
| A full living room plus other furniture | $320 to $450 (about 1/2 truck) |
Stairs, a basement, a long carry from the back of a townhouse or a third-floor walk-up do not add a fee. A sleeper sofa is priced as a couch, not as two items, even though the steel bed frame inside it makes it much heavier. If you are clearing more than the living room, the furniture removal page and the free truck-load estimator show how a bigger load adds up, and the full junk removal cost page lists every tier.
The couches that cause the trouble
Most couches are an easy two-person carry. These four are the ones people call about.
Sectionals. A sectional is several pieces that look like one, joined by brackets or metal clips underneath. We separate them in the room so each piece goes through the door on its own. For the Region's curbside program, each piece counts toward your item limit, which is why a three-piece sectional can use up a whole month's bulky collection on its own.
Sleeper sofas and sofa beds. The fold-out mechanism is a steel frame, and it is the reason a sleeper is far heavier than the same couch without one. It is also the part that swings open on a staircase if nobody straps it. We tie the mechanism shut before it moves, which protects your walls and the person on the low end.
Recliners and power recliners. Reclining couches and chairs have a heavy steel mechanism inside, and power models have a motor, a cable and sometimes a battery pack. Unplug it before we arrive and tell us it is a power model so the crew knows what they are lifting.
Couches that will not come back out. Plenty of couches went into a basement before a renovation narrowed the stairs, or into a condo before a door was swapped. Getting it out is our problem. If it has to come apart to clear a tight turn, we take the legs, back or arms off, and in the worst case we cut the frame on site. You are getting rid of it, so it does not need to survive the trip.
Old couch removal from Kitchener homes and condos
We carry it from the room it is in. That covers the finished basement in Forest Heights, the second floor of a semi near Victoria Park, the walk-up above a shop on King Street and the condo tower Downtown where the elevator has to be booked. For condos and apartments, book the service elevator for the window we give you and tell us the building rules. We pad the elevator if the building asks for it, and we never leave a couch in a garbage room or a loading area.
Will the garbage truck take a couch?
Not with the regular garbage. The Region of Waterloo picks up couches only on your household's once-a-month bulky item day, and only within these limits, all from the Region's own bulky items page and its collection requirements:
- Couches and chairs up to 6 feet long. A standard three-seat sofa is often longer than that, and a long one is not collected.
- Under 200 lb (90 kg) per item. Some sleeper sofas and oversized recliners come close.
- Three items per collection for a single-family home, six for a duplex and ten for a building of three to six units. Each sectional piece is an item.
- No garbage tags on bulky items, and nothing with a "free" or "for sale" sign on it. Crews skip it.
- Set out no earlier than 5 p.m. the day before and by 7 a.m. on the day. Your bulky date is in the Region's Waste Whiz app and collection calendar.
When the couch is too long, too heavy, over the item count, or your bulky day is three weeks away and the new couch arrives Saturday, that is when people book a pickup. Buildings of seven or more units are not on curbside collection at all, so condo and apartment residents need the building's own arrangement, a self-haul or a crew.
Taking a couch to the dump yourself
You can, and for one couch it is cheap. The Region's drop-off sites are at 925 Erb Street West in Waterloo and 201 Savage Drive in Cambridge, open to residents Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a $15 minimum charge per load, which covers about 125 kg of garbage, and most single couches weigh well under that. So the fee for one couch is usually just the $15 minimum.
What it really costs is a vehicle that fits a sofa, a second person to carry it, and an hour of your Saturday. Bring your own helper, because site staff do not unload for you. If the couch is going with other junk, sort it, since a mixed load is billed at the highest rate. Our Waterloo Region dump hours and fees guide has the full rate table and which gate to use.
Couches with bed bugs
Tell us when you book. It changes how the job is done, and we would rather know than find out in the truck.
Health Canada's guidance on getting rid of bedbugs is clear on the basics: wrap anything you throw out in plastic, tape the edges so nothing escapes on the way out, and label it so nobody else takes it home. Wrap it in the room it is in, before it travels through the rest of the house. If a pest control company is treating the home, ask them about timing, because removing furniture before the treatment can carry bugs into other rooms.
A couch that has had bed bugs is never donated or resold. It goes to disposal, wrapped. If you need the infestation itself dealt with, that is a licensed pest control job, not ours.
Will a charity take my old couch?
Sometimes, and it is worth checking before you pay anyone. The Region suggests reuse stores, charities and selling online for household goods in good shape, and a clean couch from a smoke-free, pet-free home often finds a taker on a local marketplace within a week.
The honest catch is that upholstered furniture is the hardest donation to place. Charities and reuse stores turn down couches with stains, tears, pet wear, odours or sagging cushions, and many will not take sleeper sofas at all. Call the store before you load it. If you book us and the couch is in good shape, we route it to reuse where an outlet will take it. If it is worn out, it goes to disposal, and we do not pretend otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
How much does couch removal cost in Kitchener?
One couch, sofa, loveseat or recliner runs $90 to $150. Two couches, or a couch, loveseat and chair together, usually fill about a quarter truck at $200 to $300. Stairs and long carries do not add a fee, and the price is locked before we lift.
Will the garbage truck take a couch in Kitchener?
Not with regular garbage. The Region collects couches only on your once-a-month bulky item day, up to 6 feet long and under 200 lb, within three items per collection for a single-family home. Garbage tags cannot be used on bulky items.
Can I take a couch to the dump myself?
Yes. The Region drop-off sites at 925 Erb Street West in Waterloo and 201 Savage Drive in Cambridge take couches during resident hours, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Most single couches fall under the $15 minimum charge, which covers about 125 kg. You need a vehicle and a helper, because site staff do not unload.
Do you remove sectionals and sleeper sofas?
Yes. Sectionals are separated in the room and carried out piece by piece. Sleeper sofas are priced as one couch, and we tie the fold-out mechanism shut before it moves so it cannot swing open on the stairs.
Will you take a sofa bed down a narrow staircase?
Yes. Century homes near Victoria Park and Downtown have tight stairs, so we bring straps and take the couch apart if that is what it takes to clear them. It is going to disposal or reuse, so it does not need to come out in one piece.
Can you take a couch that has bed bugs?
Tell us when you book. Wrap it in plastic, tape the edges and label it before it leaves the room, as Health Canada advises. It goes straight to disposal and is never donated or resold.
Will a charity take my old couch?
Only if it is clean and in good shape. Upholstered furniture is the hardest item to donate, and stained, torn or pet-worn couches are usually refused. Call the store first; if you book us, usable couches go to reuse where an outlet will take them.
Can you remove a couch the same day?
Usually yes. Call in the morning and there is a good chance we take it that afternoon, with a two-hour arrival window. See same-day junk removal.
Do I need to be home for couch removal?
For anything inside the house, someone needs to let us in and see the price before we lift. If the couch is already on a porch or in an open garage, call and we will tell you whether a pickup while you are out works for that job.
