We do the carrying, you point
You do not move it to the curb. We come inside and take the piece from wherever it sits, a third-floor walk-up in Downtown Kitchener, a finished basement in Forest Heights, a backyard in Stanley Park. Older homes near Victoria Park have narrow century staircases and tight doorways, and getting a solid-wood dresser or an armoire down them is our problem, not yours.
We pad the corners, watch the floors and the drywall, and take the item apart if that is the only way it clears the stairs. Two people and the right straps turn a two-hour wrestling match into a ten-minute pickup. Heavy furniture removal
Some pieces are heavy for reasons you cannot see. Solid oak and maple dressers, marble-topped tables, old china cabinets, waterbed frames and gun safes all outweigh their size. Particleboard furniture is the opposite problem: it is light, but it falls apart on the stairs if it is lifted wrong.
None of it costs extra with us. We price by the space the furniture takes in the truck, not its weight, so a heavy dresser costs the same as a light one of the same size. What weight changes is how many people we send, and we ask about it when you book. The exception is anything over the Region's 200 lb curbside limit, which will never go out on bulky day no matter how you schedule it.
How to get rid of large furniture in Kitchener
There are four honest ways to do it, and the cheapest one depends on the piece.
- Sell or give it away. A solid-wood dresser or dining set in decent shape moves on local marketplaces, and the Region's own reuse tips point to thrift stores, reuse stores like Habitat for Humanity ReStore, consignment and selling online. Call before you drive, because reuse stores turn down damaged pieces.
- Put it out on bulky day. Free, if it fits the rules: once a month, three items per collection for a single-family home, each under 200 lb, with no garbage tags. Details are on the Region's bulky items page.
- Drive it to a Region drop-off site. 925 Erb Street West in Waterloo or 201 Savage Drive in Cambridge, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is a $15 minimum per load, and a mixed load is billed at the highest rate. You need a vehicle and a helper, since site staff do not unload.
- Book a pickup. When it is too big for your car, over the item limit, up a flight of stairs, or needed gone before the next bulky day.
Do furniture stores take away old furniture?
Some do, but only as part of delivering something new, and usually for a fee or with conditions such as the old piece being the same type and ready at the door. It is worth asking at the time you buy, because adding haul-away later is often not an option. If the store will not take it, or you are not replacing the piece at all, that is where a removal crew comes in.
Donated first, dumped last
Furniture in usable shape goes to a local charity or reuse outlet where one will take it, because a dresser someone can still use should not go in a hole in the ground. What is broken or soiled gets broken down so the wood, metal and fabric are sorted rather than thrown as one mixed load.
You are not paying us to drive your old dresser around the block to a dumpster. You are paying for it to leave your house and land in the right place.
Getting rid of it in Kitchener and Waterloo Region
The Region will take furniture at the curb, but only on your household's once-a-month bulky-item day, capped at three items for a single-family home and 200 lb per piece, and never with a garbage tag on it. If you have missed the slot or the piece is over the cap, your options are a scheduled hauler or a trip yourself to the Region of Waterloo drop-off sites at 925 Erb Street West in Waterloo and 201 Savage Drive in Cambridge. Both are open to residents Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed on holidays, and there is a $15 minimum charge per load and mixed, unsorted loads are billed at the highest rate.
