How curbside pickup works in the City of Waterloo
Garbage and bulky items in the City of Waterloo are collected by the Region of Waterloo, not by the City, under the same rules as Kitchener and Cambridge. Since the Region's 2026 curbside changes took effect in March, the black garbage cart goes every other week and bulky items are picked up once a month. The bulky rules, from the Region's bulky items page and collection requirements:
| Rule | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Once a month, on your scheduled bulky day | Your date is in the Waste Whiz app and the 2026 collection calendar |
| 3 items for a single-family home | 6 for a duplex, 10 for a building of three to six units |
| Under 200 lb (90 kg) per item | Pianos, pool tables and cast-iron tubs are never collected |
| Couches and chairs up to 6 feet long | Carpet rolled and tied to 3 feet; appliances with doors taped shut |
| No garbage tags on bulky items | You cannot pay your way past the item limit |
| Out by 7 a.m., not before 5 p.m. the day before | Anything signed "free" or "for sale" is skipped |
Two Waterloo situations fall outside that program entirely. Buildings with seven or more units are not on curbside collection, so most apartment and condo residents rely on the building's own contract. And the Region's designated downtown collection, which covers Uptown Waterloo, says plainly that bulky items and yard waste are not included. If you live in an Uptown unit, there is no bulky day to wait for.
Mattress removal in Waterloo
Mattresses are on the Region's accepted bulky list, so a house can put one out on bulky day as one of its three items. The catch is everything around it: a queen mattress and box spring are two items, a student house clearing four bedrooms has eight, and a building of seven or more units has no curbside pickup at all. Mattress and box spring removal runs $90 to $130 per set with us, carried down from the bedroom. Where a mattress recycler will take it, that is where it goes. The mattress removal page covers the recycling side and the options for getting rid of one yourself.
The Waterloo landfill, if you would rather haul it yourself
The only operating landfill in Waterloo Region is in the City of Waterloo, at 925 Erb Street West. Residents use Gate 2, which takes cars, vans, pickups and single-axle trailers. Bigger vehicles, dump trucks and larger trailers go through Gate 1. Resident hours are Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed on holidays, and the site only accepts waste generated inside the Region.
The Region's drop-off fees, effective April 1, 2026:
- A $15 minimum on every load, which covers about 125 kg of garbage
- $120 per tonne for general garbage, and $82.50 for appliances, scrap metal, yard waste and recyclables
- A $10 per-unit refrigerant fee on fridges, freezers and air conditioners
- Mixed loads billed at the highest rate, so sort before you go
For one couch or a few bags, that trip is genuinely cheap and we will say so. Our Waterloo Region dump hours and fees guide has the full table, the Cambridge site at 201 Savage Drive, and which gate to use.
Student move-outs in Northdale and near the campuses
Waterloo's junk calendar follows the universities. The City describes Northdale, the neighbourhood between University Avenue West, Phillip Street, Columbia Street West and King Street North, as one where student rental housing has replaced most permanent residents over the past 25 years. When terms end, a lot of furniture changes hands at once.
The 2026 to 2027 dates that drive it:
- University of Waterloo: the undergraduate final exam period runs December 10 to 23, 2026 in the fall and April 15 to 30, 2027 in the winter (UWaterloo important dates).
- Wilfrid Laurier University: the fall exam period runs December 12 to 23, and winter exams run April 15 to 30, 2027 (Laurier important dates).
The last week of April is the crunch: lease changeovers, bulky days that do not line up with move-out day, and a three-item limit against a house of five bedrooms. The Region is explicit that waste limits apply during move-in and move-out like any other week. A pile left on the lawn is a City matter too: Waterloo's lot maintenance by-law (2011-123) lists indoor furniture and appliances among the "undesirable material" a property cannot keep outside, and the City can order a clean-up and add the cost to the tax roll.
If your lease ends in late April or December, book a week ahead. We clear a whole student unit in one visit, and housemates can split one price instead of each paying for a pickup.
For Waterloo landlords and property managers
Since July 1, 2026, Waterloo's rental housing licensing by-law (2025-044) licenses low-rise rental units, and an applicant has to file a property maintenance plan showing how the unit will stay compliant with City by-laws, including where garbage and recycling containers are stored. A turnover that ends with a mattress and a broken futon at the curb for three weeks is exactly what that plan is supposed to prevent.
What you can do with a tenant's leftover belongings depends on how the tenancy ended. The Landlord and Tenant Board's guide to property left behind says a landlord may dispose of it immediately after a tenant leaves on a notice or an agreement, but must make it available for 72 hours (8 a.m. to 8 p.m.) after a Sheriff-enforced eviction, and must wait 30 days in an abandonment case. Tell us which applies and we schedule to it. For multi-unit turnovers we quote per unit and invoice per job; see commercial and property management and eviction and foreclosure cleanouts.
Uptown Waterloo condos and apartments
Uptown and the towers near the universities are mostly buildings of seven or more units, so curbside pickup is not an option and the garbage room is not a furniture room. We book around your service elevator and move-in hours, carry everything from the unit, and leave it swept for the walkthrough. Have the elevator booked for the arrival window we give you, and send us the building's rules for loading zones and elevator padding.

Frequently asked questions
How much does junk removal cost in Waterloo, Ontario?
About $90 to $150 for a single item, $200 to $300 for a quarter truck, and $550 to $750 for a full truck. These are the same published rates as Kitchener, with no extra charge for Waterloo, and your exact price is locked before we load.
How many bulky items can I put out in Waterloo?
Three items per collection for a single-family home, six for a duplex and ten for a building of three to six units, once a month on your scheduled bulky day. Each item must be under 200 lb, and garbage tags cannot be used on bulky items.
Is there bulky item pickup in Uptown Waterloo?
Not on the Region's downtown cart program, which states that bulky items and yard waste are not included. Buildings of seven or more units are also outside curbside collection, so condo residents need the building's arrangement, a self-haul or a crew.
Where is the Waterloo dump and when is it open?
The Region's landfill is at 925 Erb Street West. Residents use Gate 2, Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., closed holidays. There is a $15 minimum per load and general garbage is $120 per tonne.
Can you do mattress removal in Waterloo?
Yes. A mattress and box spring set runs $90 to $130, carried down from the bedroom and sent to a recycler where one will take it. The Region also collects mattresses on bulky day, but each mattress and each box spring counts as one of your items.
Can you clear a student house at the end of April?
Yes. Book a week ahead, because both UWaterloo and Laurier winter exams run to April 30, 2027 and lease changeovers bunch up right after. Housemates can split one volume price for the whole house.
Do you work for Waterloo landlords?
Yes. We quote per unit, invoice per job and schedule turnovers around the rules for a tenant's left-behind property, which differ after a notice, an abandonment or a Sheriff eviction.
Do you come the same day in Waterloo?
Usually. Waterloo, Kitchener and Cambridge are our easiest same-day areas. Call in the morning and there is a good chance we clear it that afternoon, with a real two-hour arrival window.
